What do you publish? Many of your books feature minority characters. Is this a preference? How do you feel about graphic violence, foul language, and explicit sex in your adult books? Do you provide marketing for your books? I'm ready to submit. Now what?
What do you publish?
We publish novels and novellas that fall outside the real world. That means fantasy, science fiction, and the various subgenres of speculative fiction. We'll consider urban fantasy, paranormal romance, speculative, dystopia, cyberpunk, space opera, and more. We publish young adult, new adult, and adult books. In some cases, we may be open to mature middle grade stories as well.
Many of your books feature minority characters. Is this a preference?
Dragonfairy Press is a minority-owned company, and two of its founders have contributed books with minority protagonists. This has encouraged many submissions from minority authors. We give no preference to minorities, but we are proud to feature them boldly on our book covers when applicable.
How do you feel about graphic violence, foul language, and explicit sex in your adult books?
Don't worry about sex, violence, gore, or foul language. While we certainly do not require these, we don't shy away from them either.
Do you accept previously published works?
Generally, no. In rare circumstances, we will accept previously self-published works, but we need a great reason to do this. For example, if you submit the second novel in a series to us, we may also consider republishing the first novel. If you send us a previously published manuscript, please tell us in your submission why we should make an exception for you.
Do you accept simultaneous submissions, resubmissions, or multiple submissions?
Hold on there! One question at a time.
We accept simultaneous submissions. That means you can submit your manuscript to us even if you are submitting it to other publishers as well. We do, however, ask that you please keep us informed about the status of your other submissions of any manuscript that you send us for consideration.
We accept resubmissions. In other words, after revisions, you may resubmit a manuscript that we previously rejected. Please tell us in your query letter how the manuscript has been improved since the last time it was submitted to us.
We do not accept multiple submissions. Please send us your best work, and wait for our response before sending us anything else.
Do you consider incomplete manuscripts?
Yes. We will most likely be tougher on these submissions, but we do consider them. Please include enough of the manuscript so that we can evaluate your writing style and plot setup. We suggest submitting at least 20% of the manuscript. Please also make sure your synopsis is accurate and thorough, as it will play an even greater role in our considerations than usual.
What's a synopsis, and why should I send one with my submission?
Your synopsis, if you send one, should tell us what happens in your manuscript. Introduce your characters, present the various turning points in your story, and give away the ending. We no longer require that you submit a synopsis with your manuscript, but we encourage it. Although we wish we could, we don't have the time to read every manuscript in full. After reading the beginning of your manuscript, we may like your writing but have reservations about where the story is going. In that case, a synopsis may help us decide to continue reading.
Will you tell me why you did not accept my manuscript?
In most cases, we will send you a form letter if we do not accept your manuscript. We wish we could give everyone specific feedback, but we don't have the time. If we provided feedback to everyone, this would slow down our review process tremendously. If you'd like feedback, please feel free to request it in response to our form letter. We may or may not comply with your request, depending on how busy we are.
How involved are authors in the publication process?
Although we have the final the say on the various aspects of publication, we keep our authors involved at every step. For example, we consult with authors about cover art, and we give them an opportunity to discuss edits with us. We want each author to be just as happy with the final product as we are.
Do you provide marketing for your books?
Yes! We actively seek reviews for each and every book we publish. In some cases, we may enter our books for awards, and we may set up virtual appearances for our authors. Still, we do expect our authors to be out in the world marketing themselves. We're team-players here.
I'm ready to submit. Now what?
Please check out our submissions page for detailed instructions. We look forward to reading your manuscript!
